In a significant development in US-European relations, Poland has joined a small list of nations to establish a European maintenance hub for Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles that are made in America.
Besides Poland, the other European Patriot missile maintenance centers are located in Germany, Netherlands and Sweden.
The news was announced by Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on X.
The initiative aims to create a joint framework for servicing and maintaining PAC-3 interceptor missiles, a critical component of the Patriot air defence system used by NATO allies and supplied to Ukraine to counter Russian missile attacks.
With this facility Poland aims to create defence capabilities, demonstrating what Kosiniak-Kamysz says, is to strengthen their larger role in the NATO alliance while answering to its critics ‘who have spent recent days claiming that Poland is losing its role and we are proving how wrong they are’.
The decision by Poland comes after the United States announced that it will establish a maintenance facility for Lockheed Martin’s advanced PAC-3 air defence missile in Europe, but which country is yet to annouced.
Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden are partners in the project together with U.S. defence giant Lockheed, which builds the PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot air defence systems.
Poland’s role is set to expand in NATO’s integrated air and missile defence network as the alliance works to bolster Europe’s defence industry and military readiness.
The Patriot Hub in Poland is expected to serve the NATO’s most advanced air defence systems in Europe.
