In a major boost to the Indian Air Force’s precision strike capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth ₹810.79 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW).
The contract, awarded under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, was formally placed with BDL on Wednesday.
SAT-SAAW is an advanced air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb designed to strike enemy airfields and other strategic targets from a long stand-off range, enabling launch platforms to remain outside hostile air defence envelopes.
The weapon can be integrated with multiple Indian Air Force platforms, including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30MKI fighter aircraft.
Indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the SAT-SAAW system will feature an indigenous content of around 60 per cent. Key subsystems being indigenised include the Initial Measurement Unit (IMU), Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier.
According to the Ministry of Defence, deliveries of the weapon system are scheduled during 2027-28 and 2028-29.
The induction of SAT-SAAW is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Air Force’s long-range precision strike capability, ensuring greater operational flexibility and strengthening the country’s overall defence preparedness.
