Boost to Armoured Capability as MoD Signs ₹586 Crore APU Contract for Battle Tanks

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a ₹586 crore contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited for the procurement of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks.

The agreement was signed in New Delhi on Monday in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the Ministry said.

According to the MoD, the Auxiliary Power Unit serves as an alternative source of electrical power for critical tank systems, including the fire control system, firing circuits, gun stabilisation mechanisms and other onboard equipment.

The induction of indigenously developed APUs is expected to enhance the operational readiness, reliability and sustainment capability of the Indian Army’s mechanised formations, particularly during prolonged deployments and combat operations.

The Ministry said the procurement marks a significant step in the indigenisation of critical subsystems for armoured platforms and reflects the growing role of industry-led innovation under the Defence Acquisition Procedure’s Make-II framework.

The project is also expected to strengthen the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem while supporting the government’s broader objective of achieving greater self-reliance in defence production.
